All the best Red Carpet fashion moments from 2024

In 2024, theme dressing continued to take over the red carpets, menswear became dramatic and transparent fabric reigned supreme. John Galliano’s Maison Margiela Artisanal collection was well represented at celebrity events, as were Jonathan Anderson’s designs for Loewe and Thom Browne. Of course, the Met Gala provided a ton of sartorial fodder, from Tyla’s sand-covered outfit to the debut of Bad Bunny’s Count Axel cosplay. In addition, both the Venice and Cannes Film Festivals Vanity Fair The Oscar party and the Academy Gala did their part to create space for big fashion, as did the various film and magazine tours. It seems like every week brought headline-worthy lineups, but there were 25 that really stood out. So as we gear up for another year of celebrity style, let’s look back at the best red carpet moments of 2024.

Zendaya in Thom Browne

Zendaya Challengers the press tour was full of eye-catching, tennis-themed looks, but the Thom Browne ensemble she wore — which took tennis whites to a whole new level — was without a doubt her funnest contribution to the film’s many premieres.

Lady Gaga in Christian Dior Couture and Philip Treacy

The singer-turned-actress wore a sculptural Christian Dior couture gown at the Venice Film Festival for the premiere of her film, Joker: Folie à Deux. Although the design was dramatic, it still didn’t overwhelm her Philip Treacy topper. The piece, from the hat designer’s 2001 couture show, was once worn by Isabella Blow and is now believed to be part of Daphne Guinness’s personal collection.

Greta Lee in Bottega Veneta

Greta Lee had an incredible 2023 when it came to red carpet fashion. Luckily, the momentum continued into 2024 when she attended the Governors Awards in January wearing this red Bottega Veneta Fall 2023 dress with a draped skirt and padded neckline.

Simona in Tabasco Marni

It’s easy to forget that there were actually two Emmys this year: the delayed 2023 event, held in January, and the regular 2024 ceremony in September. White Lotus star Simona Tabasco took it upon herself to make sure the former show wasn’t forgotten by attending the Winter Emmys in a gorgeous Marni dress.

Taylor Russell at Loewe

No one pulls off Jonathan Anderson’s quirky designs quite like Taylor Russell. The actress also manages to bring to life some of Anderson’s (slightly) simpler creations, like this white ostrich feather embellished cut-out dress that Russell wore to the BAFTAs in February.

Carey Mulligan in Balenciaga

Carey Mulligan oozed Hollywood glamor at the 2024 Oscars. The actress had Balenciaga recreate the dress from its archives, the first time the brand has ever done so on the red carpet.

Bad Bunny at Maison Margiela Artisanal

As for the Met Gala, it appears that Bad Bunny—as well as John Galliano—was inspired by the 1962 short story, Garden of Time, JG Ballard, who served as a cue for the evening’s dress code. The singer wanted to embody the main character of the story, Count Axel, in a custom-made Maison Margiela outfit, which was expertly accessorized with Christian Louboutin Maison Margiela tabi boots and a dramatic cap.

Cate Blanchett in Hodakova

Hodakova and Cate Blanchett make a perfect couple. The Swedish label uses only recycled materials in its designs, so it’s no surprise that eco-queen Blanchett wore one – 102 spoons – to the premiere of her movie. Borderlands in August. Even better, Blanchett recycled the spoons and wore them in another look just a month later.

Tyla in Balmain

Tyla made quite the Met Gala debut this year, attending fashion’s biggest night in a sand-covered Balmain gown. The singer looked like a beach goddess emerging from the dunes in the sculpture created for her by Olivier Rousteing.

Greta Gerwig at Maison Margiela Artisanal

Galliano’s Maison Margiela Artisanal 2024 collection had a handful of red carpet moments this year, but it was fun to see the look of the collection in a more casual setting—with Greta Gerwig at the Cannes Film Festival Jury Photocall.

Greta Lee at Loewe

Lee worked with her designer Jonathan Anderson for her first Met Gala moment. And thank goodness for that, as the actress looked incredible in a sheer lace gown with appliques and a uniquely structured bodice and neckline.

Hunter Schafer in Armani Privé

Lionel Hahn/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

Hunter Schafer’s Armani Privé dress looked like it was worn on her. The jet blue silk organza number was inspired by Armani’s Spring 2011 collection, where many of these reflective models walked the runway.

Gigi Hadid in Thom Browne

Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

There’s so much to love about Gigi Hadid’s Met Gala look. Yes, the yellow floral embroidery is gorgeous and played with the theme of the evening, but the skirt – created from frayed suit jackets – really made this dress a true work of art.

Emma D’Arcy in Celine Homme

Arturo Holmes/WireImage/Getty Images

Emma D’Arcy’s style can only be described as supremely cool – and the Celine Homme gown they wore House of the Dragon the season two premiere (a long, embellished overcoat and leather pants) is a perfect example of that.

Elle Fanning in Balmain

Slide Dipasupil/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

Rousteing had a very successful Met Gala this year. Not only did he dress Tyla in her sand dress, but he also made Elle Fanning into an ice sculpture and wrapped her in a clear, almost cellophane-like fabric. The elaborate bird details on her shoulders added just the right amount of detail and made the actress a super fashionable Disney princess.

Colman in Domingo Valentino

One of the menswear red carpet stars of the moment, many of Colman Domingo’s 2024 looks could have made this list. But we especially loved the Valentino ensemble she wore to the 2024 Academy Gala for Alessandro Michele’s debut show for the brand. And yes, the cute kitty bag just added to the whole thing.

Angelina Jolie in Tamara Ralph

Taylor Russell at Loewe

The 2024 Met Gala was all about the natural composition, hosted by Taylor Russell, who wore a Loewe gown with a trompe l’oeil bodice that looked like it was carved out of wood.

Nicole Kidman in Schiaparelli Couture

The pictures of Nicole Kidman’s Schiaparelli Fall 2024 Haute Couture dress really don’t do it justice. You have to watch the video of the dress in motion to appreciate its beauty, especially the pearls falling from the model’s waist.

Da’Vine Joy at Randolph Gap

Da’Vine Joy Randolph made quite the statement at the Met Gala — in denim, of all excuses. She attended the event in a rococo-style dress designed by Zac Posen for Gap.

Cate Blanchett in Armani

When she’s not wearing recycled spoons, Blanchett is dripping with pearls, like at the Venice Film Festival, which the actress attended in an Armani suit. She teamed the design with a diamond and pearl shaped shoulder necklace, a re-use of pieces she previously wore to the BAFTAs in 2023 and 2024.

Harris Dickinson in Daniel W. Fletcher

Harris Dickinson looked extremely smart at the Academy Awards in a Daniel W. Fletcher suit with a cream jacket and trousers with contrast stitching.

Isabelle Huppert in Balenciaga

Alessandra Benedetti – Corbis/Corbis Entertainment/Getty Images

The pre-fall 2024 Balenciaga gown worn by Isabelle Huppert at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Venice Film Festival had a distinctly religious edge, making the actress the coolest pope we’ve seen in a long time.

Kylie Jenner in Haider Ackermann for Jean Paul Gaultier Couture

Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

For the 2024 CFDA Awards, Kylie Jenner pulled off a look from Haider Ackermann’s Jean Paul Gaultier Couture collection featuring a scaled top and feather-embellished skirt.
